Nessa Hearing: Bringing in Digitalisation

With the advent of consumer-facing technologies today, a systematic approach to healthcare has emerged. Companies that integrate healthcare solutions by combining technology with processes or services (either new or existing) are quietly changing the game. This is where Nessa Asia comes into the picture. Singapore based Nessa Asia combines technologies from hearing aid companies, with its own proprietary tele-audiology device and service. It completes this picture with a financial model and strong relationships with retailers to provide a seamless, integrated solution to hearing loss. The company was established by three Co-founders: Oliver Carnohan – CEO, Helder Araujo – COO and Eddy Chan – CTO.

Only about 15 percent of elderlies with hearing loss which can be the majority of people older than 65 years old for instance have a hearing aid, mostly because of a stigma, inconvenience, bad reputation and high-costs of the hearing aids. Through constant innovations, the co-founders market in Singapore, Japan and Malaysia a subscription service for Danish-made premium hearing aids that can be calibrated remotely. The products are highly tested and are co-designed with Apple, and are designed to be streamed with TV and iPhone, when customers have such devices.

Hearing aids require at least six fittings, usually people give up after two, hence hearing aids are poorly tuned, which leads to poor experience in noisy environments, especially with multiple interlocutors.

Nessa Asia has addressed the inconvenient fitting process by developing a world’s first: the Nessa Remote Hearing Pod, which provides unlimited support to its members for any tuning/ adjustment, troubleshooting and general assistance from a single press of the button.

Furthermore, Nessa Asia Hearing Egg provides hearing assessment in 10 minutes in malls and stores without the long wait and stigmas of the traditional avenues. Nessa Asia drives educational campaigns to educate seniors to test their hearing yearly, functioning as a platform to monitor hearing and ear health.

Nessa Asia’s team won’t rest until six-times as many people with hearing loss today are tested and equipped with hearing aids. Oliver mentions, “Our unique selling proposition resides in a subscription to premium hearing aids, adjusted remotely from any location.” Elaborating further, Oliver adds, “In fact, Nessa Asia performed the world’s first hearing aid fitting from an airplane, while flying over the South China Sea on a patient who was located in Tokyo.”

Today, Nessa Asia has emerged as the fastest growing digital distributor of premium-hearing aids in the world in terms of hearing aids sold as well as the number of countries penetrated. The company plans to enter one or two other APAC markets and further strengthen its Remote Testing and Fitting technologies. Nessa Asia’s Hearing Egg and Remote Pod technologies are disrupting the hearing aid industry by making it possible for audiologists to provide personalized care to customers at a scale that has never been seen before.

In addition, accessibility to its technology will see new partnerships with other industries such as Optometry, Pharmacy and Retail outlets being able to offer hearing health services where it was previously not possible.
